On February 13, Denver post pop-punk band, Relate. released their new single, Sludge. Sludge is the first release from their upcoming EP Attachment. The track opens with heavy drums and guitar, followed by powerful vocals from singer Duncan Slack. The tone is set in the first verse with a melancholic mood, speaking to a message of conforming and feeling shrunken that is encapsulated by the guitars’ droning lines and a solid drum beat chugging along. The chorus has a catchy melody with equally catchy lyrics, “I got carried away / shouldered the weight…” with instrumentals to head-bang to. To close out the chorus, Duncan sings a line that holds a lot of emotion, “the only friends I got left are the lines in the songs I write.” The second verse picks up the energy quite a bit, with a more aggressive tone as well as some screaming. The chorus returns and is followed by a room filling sound that gives the song a post-hardcore breakdown vibe that is fitting to the band’s sound. Returning to the slow, heavy-weighted instrumentals and somber lyrics until the end of the song brings it all together to convey a feeling of “sludge” that the band had gone for.

The band pulls inspiration from Warped Tour era bands like The Wonder Years, The Story So Far, and Circa Survive. According to drummer Diego Valenzuela, the song is named Sludge “because it sounds like sludge.” The song has a very muddy sound to convey the emotion within the lyrics, that talk about not being able to feel connected to people in Duncan’s life, as the band gains traction. Fans of the bands listed previously would definitely enjoy this song.

Prior to the release of Sludge, Relate. announced tour dates for the spring! They are hitting the road with California pop-punk group Calmgrove, as well as Arizona band Troubled Minds. To check them out on tour, you can find tickets here: https://linktr.ee/relatedenver
