There is a moment in every music lover's life when they realize their favorite band will finally be performing nearby, and to have any chance of being close to the front of the stage, you have to wait in line for hours. While this is not the main experience, and oftentimes you can show up to a concert just before doors and find yourself in the perfect spot, some artists have long lines that start as early as 4am. So here are a few quick tips to make your day go a little smoother.

  1. Before your show, look online and see when other fans have shown up for past shows. Especially for smaller artists, there is no need to wait outside all day when you’re the only person there. You will use your energy before your favorite act hits the stage.

  2. Drink A LOT of water, I know the fear of a bathroom run is the worst while waiting in line, but it’s better to ask the person next to you to hold your spot than to pass out midshow. Whether it be plastic bottles or your emotional support bottle, make sure to hydrate, especially for summer shows!

3. Snacks will save you. Food delivery is expensive and difficult when sitting outside a venue, so pack snacks or have a designated snack runner to grab something for lunch if needed. A small cooler with cold water will help with tip two and keep your refrigerated snacks cool.

4. Scout out the venue online beforehand. Look for the event capacity, how ticketing works, and what the stage is like so you know your ideal spot to stand when you get in. But also explore the area online and find the closest bathrooms, restaurants, and grocery stores just in case you have to make a last-minute run.

5. Treat everyone in the line with respect, this seems like the simplest one, but often times it is the one people struggle with the most. We are all there to see the same artist and have been waiting all day. If you have an extra blanket or water, share it with your line neighbor, it'll make their day easier, and you may find one of your new best friends. There’s no point in cutting, shoving, or complaining in their direction. Spend the day making friends and enjoying good music.
